What Is MUN

What Is MUN?

Model United Nations (MUN) is a skill-building and co-academic activity primarily conducted for high schoolers and/or undergraduate students. This activity, while often reffered to as extra-curricular is believed to be a co-curricular by many participants past and present, due to its nature of building individuals' global awareness and societal knowledge.

MUNs span over a duration of 2 to 3 days in the form of a Conference* consisting of participants taking on the role of Delegates*, Executive Board Members* and a Secretariat*. While participating in these roles, students are put into a simulation of the United Nations and are expected to address an Agenda* through diplomacy and discussion.

Mandates

Model United Nations (MUN) conferences follow strict mandates which in certain cases may be partially amended by either the Executive Board or Secretariat due to specific reasons such as time, participation or Delegate engagement.

These mandates form the Rules of Procedure (RoP) which dictates how a committee will flow.

Pathways of Participation

Pathways of Participation

In every MUN conference of 150 delegates, 200 delegates or even 500 delegates, there are numerous pathways each delegate will undertake to achieve their personal outcome. These pathways are essentially the approach they take when participating in an MUN and it is through these that they reap benefits either for their social life, daily life, academics or even future pursuits and careers.

While some of these pathways may appear to be only for socialising, making friends or displaying one-upmanship, it does not mean the pathway is devoid of learning. Irrespective of why you attend MUNs or how you take part in them, there is always room to grow and new knowledge is taken in either unconsciously or consciously. Numerous MUN participants and global conference founders have said that "Over a 2 or 3-day conference, every delegate unknowingly will spend a cumulative time of minimum 10 minutes paying attention to what is happening in their committee, and this time frame they will pick up new ideas and perspectives that were unknown to them or were never grasped until the MUN".

Skill Building

Approach:

Focuses on authentically representing their assigned country’s interests. This delegate prepares by researching their country’s policies, historical context, and geopolitical stance.

Actions:

Engages in formal debates, negotiates with other delegates, and seeks to build alliances with countries that share similar interests. They prioritize diplomacy and consensus-building over personal opinions.

Outcome:

Develops a deeper understanding of international relations and enhance negotiation skills, which are crucial for future careers in diplomacy or international law.

Recognition

Approach:

Aims for recognition and awards, such as Best Delegate or Outstanding Delegate.

Actions:

Prepares extensively, practices public speaking, and actively participates in debates to stand out. They may also seek feedback from peers and mentors to improve their performance.

Outcome:

Wins awards which boosts confidence and enhances their resume, making them more competitive for college admissions and job opportunities.

Knowledge Driven

Approach:

Views MUN as an educational experience to gain knowledge about global issues and the workings of the United Nations.

Actions:

Actively listens, asks questions, and engages with experienced delegates to deepen their understanding. They take notes during sessions and reflect on the discussions afterwards.

Outcome:

Gains a comprehensive understanding of international issues, which can inspire future academic pursuits or career paths in global studies or policy-making.

Networking

Approach:

Sees MUN as an opportunity to build connections with other delegates and professionals in the field of international relations.

Actions:

Participates in social events, engages in informal discussions during breaks, and exchanges contact information with peers. They may also follow up with new connections after the conference.

Outcome:

Establishes a network of contacts that can lead to internships, job opportunities, and collaborations in the future.

Socialising

Approach:

Enjoys the social aspects of MUN, engaging with delegates in a friendly and approachable manner.

Actions:

Attends all social events, interacts with various delegates, and creates a lively atmosphere during the conference.

Outcome:

Builds a reputation as a friendly delegate, facilitating collaboration and making it easier to be involved with others and develop their social skills.

Cultural Exchange Focused

Approach:

Focuses on promoting cultural exchange and understanding among delegates from diverse backgrounds.

Actions:

Shares insights about their own culture and actively learn about others, participating in cultural events or themed discussions.

Outcome:

Enhances global awareness and empathy, which are essential qualities in international relations and can lead to meaningful friendships as well as a more diverse global perspective.
